BY THE WAY TOURS

A Local Self-Driven History Tour

The Siege of Lostwithiel 1664

It’s not every day that a King Charles comes to town. If he did, much smiling and waving of flags would be in evidence in our time.

However it was a very different story in 1644 when Lostwithiel entertained the first King Charles. Set during this brutal era of English history, we tell of an invasion by thousands of grim-faced soldiers waving only flags of war. The king besieged the town raining cannon balls upon the Parliamentarian troops in occupation.

For a month the towns’ folk struggled under constant bombardment, sharing this modest town with at least 6000 Parliamentarian soldiers and their cavalry horses. Starvation, disease and atrocious living conditions ensued as the King pressed home his advantage.

‘By the way tours’ presents a self driven tour sharing this amazing true story through the eyes of two local 17th century people, telling events close to where they actually happened. Download our app onto your phone and we will tell you exactly where to go, delivering the story by GPS along lanes around the town. It’s free to use. About Us

By The Way has been in development for many years now and we are pleased to have had support from many experts, both locally and from far.

izi.TRAVEL, an open and free story-telling platform for producers to publish stories and a smart phone app for consumers to hear was born in 2011. The idea was to establish a platform to connect cities, museums and their stories with travellers, who wanted to explore the world in a brand new, innovative way.
